Our Christian Roots
Our congregation is affiliated with the United Church of Christ, a merger of several streams of Protestantism: Congregational, Christian, Evangelical and Reformed churches. The Congregationalists were the Pilgrims of Plymouth Rock and New England. The Christian Church was the first truly American Protestant community, founded in the early 1800’s. Evangelical and Reformed German Protestants came to America in the 1700 and 1800’s, settling in and starting churches from the East Coast through the Midwest. In 1957 these four Christian communities united to form the United Church of Christ. Our roots run deep in the Protestant Reformation, yet by name we are a relatively new Christian denomination, just over 50 years old.
What We Believe
Sun Lakes United Church of Christ acknowledges as its sole head Jesus Christ, Son of God, and Savior. We acknowledge as kindred in Christ all who share in this confession. We look to the word of God in the scriptures and to the presence and power of the Holy Spirit, to prosper our creative and redemptive work in the world. We claim as our own the faith of the historic Church as expressed in the ancient creeds and reclaimed in the basic insights of the Protestant Reformation. We affirm the responsibility of the church in each generation to make this faith our own in reality of worship, in honesty of thought and expression and in purity of heart before God. In accordance with the teaching of our Lord and practice prevailing among evangelical Christians, we recognize two sacraments, Baptism and the Lord’s Supper or Holy Communion.
Is composed of over 6,000 churches throughout the United States, related to 32 colleges, 16 seminaries, 77 health institutions and 12 children’s homes. It supports mission work in 40 countries.
Membership in the Sun Lakes United Church of Christ is by letter of transfer from any of the many Christian denominations, by reaffirmation of faith or a first-time confession of faith. We welcome Associate Members who may wish to maintain membership in their home churches.
