HARNER'S CORNER, Featuring Articles from the "Sun Lakes Splash"
"Sun Lakes United Church of Christ installs new pastor," from April 2011 edition:
The word "highlight" is defined variously, but the one that caught my attention is "the most memorable part of a period of time."
March 6, 2011 was a highlight in the history of the congregation.
The Rev. Dr. Vernon Meyer, who has been serving as pastor since last fall, was formally installed as the pastor/teacher. Participants in the service included the Rev. Dr. John Dorhauer, Conference Minister, Mr. Dan Mullens, representing the Conference Board of Church and Ministry and Mr. Richard Stanford, Moderator of the congregation.
As a former priest in the Catholic Church, the pastor/teacher brings to the congregation a contagious commitment to Christ, skillful Biblical scholarship, enthusiastic preaching, endless ideas about church life, a warm sense of humor and a much-appreciated caring for people.
In addition to leading worship, the pastor/teacher is offering a seven-week series entitled "Living the Questions." Each session is held on Sunday from 9:30AM to 10:30AM in the conference room of the church office. Discussion follows a 20-minute video presentation that features theologians and scholars.
Another series being offered by the pastor/teacher meets in the Chapel Center each Wednesday through Lent at 9:00AM. This series includes a presentation and discussion based on the Scripture reading for the following Sunday.
The pastor/teacher will lead Holy Week services, beginning with Palm Sunday on April 17. On Thursday, April 21 at 7:00PM there will be a Tennebrae Service. The word Tennebrae means darkness and commemorates the final hours of Jesus' life on earth by focusing on his suffering and death. The gradual extinguishing of candles symbolizes the fading loyalty of the disciples of Jesus and portrays the diminishing light of the world as Christ departed from it. The climax of the church year is Easter, which will be April 24 this year. This celebration of the resurrection of Jesus will be in the context of joyful music and a hopeful sermon.
The pastor/teacher will lead a 10-day tour of Northern Italy beginning May 7. This tour will include visits to Venice, Verona, Bergamo, Lake Como and Lake Garva. Interested persons may obtain specific details by calling the church office at 480-895-6317.
The congregation invites persons looking for a church that features exciting and helpful Biblical preaching and a variety of program opportunities to participate in the activities of the church and to attend worship at 11:15AM in the Sun Lakes Chapel, located across the street from the Sun Lakes Country Club.
